Care and Maintenance of Your Stones and Crystals.
CHARGING YOUR CRYSTALS Charging your crystals is in some ways the opposite of clearing them. When you clear a crystal you are removing any unwanted vibrations. Special-Purpose Activation You may want to charge the land you live on with crystalline energy by burying crystals in the earth. (Be sure you note or write down where you buried them. A map would be a good idea.) Some people like to program crystals, then bury them in their gardens to help in an abundant crop. If you'd like to charge your crystals in preparation for this you can bury them in dried flowers. (If you are using potpourri make sure that it isn't artificially scented.) At any time of year (providing the ground isn't frozen) you can bury one near a tree. This could either be a tree which is your favorite, or one associated with a particular positive value. Oaks symbolize strength, junipers purification, and pine trees in a number of cultures are associated with healing. You can also get particular results when you place a crystal in sunlight. This is one of the most powerful ways to charge your crystal with active energy, i.e., energy which will help you to manifest what you want. This is useful if you want to create an increase in some area of your life, such as increased vitality, income, love. Put the crystal out in the sun, then program it for your intention. There are particular times in the solar cycle which have special energies. The fall equinox is associated with harvest, and you might want to charge a crystal at this time for the fulfillment of your dreams. The spring equinox relates to growth. In general, moonlight has two phases, waxing and waning, and two other times of significance: the full moon and the dark of the moon. The energy of the waxing moon relates to new beginnings. The full moon corresponds to abundance in all areas of life. The waning moon connects to decrease (decrease of an illness, of debt, of negativity); while a crystal charged in the dark of the moon would be helpful for meditation or any other kind of inner work.
Charging Methods Place crystals in the reflected light of Austrian crystals, i.e., where the rainbows from such crystals fall. (Note: Austrian crystals are leaded glass, hence human-made crystals). The crystals can remain in place for as long as the Austrian crystals are reflecting sunlight. Place crystals on a quartz cluster. Quartz amplifies the energy of any crystal with which it is in contact. Crystals can also be activated with sound. Put a crystal near a single-note chime and strike the chime gently several times. This has a harmonizing effect on the crystal. If you like to chant and make it a regular practice do so in the presence of your crystals, especially if you want to use them as part of your meditation practice. Your thoughts can have an activating or de-activating effect on crystals. If your thoughts have been gloomy and you've also been noticing that your crystals have gotten cloudy or dull, you'll realize that they've been absorbing your negativity. In this case do not delay in clearing them thoroughly. To activate crystals with your thoughts you could hold them in your hands and visualize them bathed in light and love. You can also tell them (either silently or aloud) how much you appreciate them. They may not understand the words (and, then again, they may), but your intention will be clearly transmitted.
Reiki Charging If you are a Reiki I practitioner you can charge your crystals with Reiki energy by holding them in your hands and activating this energy within you in whatever ways your Reiki Master may have taught you how to do this. One method is to say "Reiki on." Another is to give yourself or someone else a Reiki treatment before charging your crystals. If you are a Reiki II practitioner you can draw the symbols over your crystals. For simple charging you can draw the energy symbol over a crystal. When you want to use a crystal to help clear up some mental and/or emotional confusion, hold it in one hand and draw the mental/emotional balance symbol over it. When you plan to program a crystal for a goal, draw the distant healing symbol over it and sometimes the others afterwards.
When you first get a crystal you may want to clear it of any energy it picked up on its way to you. If you've been doing a lot of emotional healing and releasing with your crystals you'll also want to clear them because crystals may absorb the energy you've released. Crystals should be periodically cleared even if you haven't been using them for meditation or healing work, if only because they do get dusty. (This is sometimes called cleaning). When you charge crystals you're basically giving them the chance to refresh their ability to focus and expand their energy. There are several reasons to do this. Sometimes after you've cleared a crystal its energy may seem a little dull or flat. A crystal which hasn't been worked with for awhile may also feel this way. If you notice that a crystal has become cloudy you may want to both clear and activate it. If you want to program a crystal for a special purpose, before you program it you may want to activate its energy for that purpose
Crystals and Pyramids Pyramids generate negative ions. In addition, they are believed to have a generally balancing effect on the electromagnetic field of the body. This effect is enhanced by the particular materials used, such as pure 24K gold and copper. Pyramids are often used to charge crystals. This is a popular use for pyramids. It is generally believed that quartz crystals are most effective for this use, as they may hold the charge for several weeks. These crystals can then be used for healing purposes or for programming. Pyramid charging, however, is good for any crystal which seems to need it.
CLEANING AND CLEARING YOUR CRYSTALS Crystals are basically low-maintenance companions. They don't need to be fed or walked, and don't require trips to the vet. They do from time to time need to be cleaned and cleared. Clearing isn't the same as cleaning, although both acts can be accomplished by the same process. Whether or not your crystals often need to be cleared they will sometimes need to be cleaned. I recommend immersing them in water for a minute or so, then gently drying them with a towel. Don't use any kind of detergent unless for some reason grease has gotten on them. Detergents, even organic ones, tend to leave a film on crystals. Inner DustClearing crystals is more an act of getting rid of inner, psychic dust. Crystals are valuable in the technical world because they record and store information. When we translate this role into spiritual terms we say that crystals take in and store the vibrations which surround them. This benefits us in that we are able to program them to translate our desires and dreams into a vibration which attracts the energy which will materialize them. Crystals, however, not being us, don't discriminate between "good" and "bad" vibrations, and collect whatever's around. Making a Crystal YoursWhen you first purchase crystals you want to make them yours. You will want to erase or clear from them the vibrations of all those who have handled them -- even those of the nice people at Beyond the Rainbow -- not because those vibrations are bad, but because your crystals, in order to respond to your needs and wishes, must be attuned to your vibrations. There are times when you don't want a crystal to have your vibrations, either. If you've been working with crystals to heal emotional pain, your crystals may absorb these vibrations. The same can be true if you've been doing a lot of releasing work. If you've programmed crystals for specific purposes, you'll need to clear them if you want to program them for new goals/dreams. Crystal BathsOne way to clear your crystals is to bury them in sea or kosher salt overnight. Wash them afterwards and, if possible, put them in a place where they can dry in the sun. You can get similar results by using salt water, and this is a better idea for highly polished stones, as salt crystals may scratch your crystals' surfaces. Immersing them in salt water serves the dual purposes of cleaning and clearing. My method is to fill bowls in filtered water into which I shake some salt (probably the equivalent of two tablespoons per pint of water.) I leave the crystals in the water overnight. The next day I rinse them and put them out to dry. I prefer to let them dry by themselves. If the temperature is warm (crystals may crack in sub-freezing temperatures) I put the bowls outside and let them dry in the sun.
Precautions Although I've used this method for many years without traumatized crystals, I think it's appropriate to say that other people feel this is too harsh a clearing method. If you'd like to try this method, use it with a few crystals and see how you feel. Some crystals shouldn't be placed in water, particularly soft stones such as azurite, malachite, rough chrysocolla, selenite and angelite. A variant on the sea salt method is to clear your crystals by placing them in the ocean. Put them in a pail unless you plan to give a gift to the sea. SmudgingThis is the least invasive and most popular method for clearing crystals. You can use a smudge stick for this. A smudge stick may consist of some of the following herbs: include cedar, sage, lavender, juniper, pine. Pass your crystals through the smoke -- or, if you have arrangements of crystals around your house, pass the smudge stick over the crystals. This method is excellent as well for clearing yourself and your environment.
Cleaning/Clearing with Essential Oils The relationship between crystals and essential oils deserves an article of its own. My focus here is on particular oils that have cleaning/clearing properties. The most economical method for using oils is to place crystals in a container, fill it with filtered water as you would for the salt water method, and put a drop or two of essential oil into the water. Lemon: This has a purifying effect and, on a practical level, cuts grease. Juniper: Like juniper in a smudge stick, juniper oil has the ability to help release any negative vibrations. Lavender: If you've been doing any kind of intense emotional work with your crystals, lavender oil has a calming and balancing effect. Put some on yourself, too. The previous methods can work well for large quantities of crystals. The following methods are better for individual crystals or small quantities of small crystals. The Earth MethodYou can bury your crystals in the earth. (Do not use this method on iron-based stones such as hematite and tiger iron.) This method can clear any rough energy from your crystals and give them a kind of rebirth in the earth (from which most crystals are mined). It's like taking them home. Be sure to mark the place where you've buried them.
Visualization Close your eyes, relax, and while holding your Crystal, visualize it glowing with white light or rainbow hues. Feel it radiating smooth, balanced energy.
ReikiUsing Reiki alone or in combination with visualization can be effective in clearing your crystals. If you're Reiki Level I hold the crystal in your hand and simply Reiki it. If you're Reiki II you can also draw the mental/emotional symbol over your crystals.
How Often Do Crystals Need to be Cleared? It depends on how much you use them. If they're sitting on your desk, looking pretty (and you can get a great deal of value just from having them around) once every three months is probably sufficient in which case they probably need baths, too. Crystals you work with every day need to be cleared no less than once a month. If, as mentioned above, you do intense emotional work with your crystals, clear them after each session. If a crystal looks cloudy or has a dull feeling it probably needs to be cleared. It is always a good idea to clear a crystal before you program it. However, once you've programmed it don't clear it until it's done its work.
