Native American
Smudging
Smudging is a simple way of thanking the earth
and purifying a space. Variations of smudging are found in cultures throughout
the world.
Sage is used to purify the
mind, body and spirit before praying. It is also used to purify sacred items
such as pipes, and eagle feathers. Some may use it to purify their homes,
offices, cars and some carry a small amount of Sage in a pocket or medicine
pouch to insure personal and spiritual safety.
Sage is burned to drive out
bad spirits or feelings and is valued for its aromatic properties. As the smoke
rises so does the negative energy. If you are cleansing a room or house, try to
open the windows and let the smoke carry the negative energy right out the
window.
Tradition would have you start
your cleansing in the East , fanning the smoke with a feather, a feather fan or
just your hand. Continue around the room in a clockwise direction, bathing
the room and each person in the room for complete cleansing.
When using bundles, don't allow it
to burn with open flames. You just want it to smolder. When using loose
herbs, use a fire-proof container. Traditionally, an abalone shell can be used.
Smudging can also be used to
cleanse crystals and stones. Just pass the stones or crystals through the smoke
a couple times.
Don't forget that incense can also
be used to cleanse an area.
It is a good practice to smudge each person in a group,
circle, ceremony, and lodge. We begin by using a shell or bowl as a smudge pot,
with a fan or feather to waft the smoke about. Starting from the East and
holding the lit smudge pot, each person can bathe themselves in the smoke. Start
with the feet and work your way up. Make sure to touch with the smoke all parts
of the body. It is also a good idea to breathe some in. We can purify and
cleanse fairly regularly in this day and age with so much sickness and negative
influences around. Smudging helps us center ourselves.
It is also good to smudge your home and any medicine tool(s) you will be using
such as pipe, jewelry, outfit, etc. Smudge the room by slowly walking clockwise
around the perimeter of the room, fanning the smudge pot, keeping it lit and
wafting the smoke about. Be sure to leave a window or door open a crack to let
the negative influences out of your area.
It is said that smudging will also bring on thoughts that are good or positive.
Other herbs used in smudging:
Sweetgrass.
Cedar was offered to the fire to smudge the lodge and people. It is also used to
waft the smoke to ward away sickness.
Copal.
We feel the knowledge in our soul, and we know it comes from our Creator. When
we pray, we get answers, then we are nurtured and we grow spiritually.
