Gemological Properties- Hematite's chemical composition is Fe203 (iron oxide); it is from the hexagonal crystal system; the appearance is opaque, dark gray to black and metallic. It's trade names are black diamond, black pearl, and Alaskan black diamond. It displays no cleavage and is splintery and granular in fracture. The hardness is 5 1/2 to 6 1/2. It is found in England, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.
