You can purchase the white hair pipe and dye it yourself. One way to do this is to make enough strong tea to cover the hair pipe. Put the hair pipe in the freshly brewed hot tea and allow it to steep for a few hours or longer, depending on how dark you want it.

Another way to dye the white hair pipe is make a strong tea out of black walnuts. (This is not the walnuts found in a grocery store.)

You can also use elderberry juice.

Alphabetical List of Products

Hair pipe was first popularized in Native American designs and have now found their way into contemporary jewelry.

Hair pipe was first introduced to the American Indians in the early 1860's. They saw the white men using bone pipe stems in their smoking pipes. The pipes stems caught the artistic eye of the Indians and they soon started to create adornments using the pipe stems.

American Indians did not make the hair pipe as is/was commonly found in the breastplates.  In the mid 1860's a white business man opened a factory in New England to manufacture the hair pipe. Most of the hair pipe was made from bone Imported  from India and China.

In the time before white man, Indians would make jewelry and adornments from bird bones and shells. The shells most commonly used was found in the South East US.

It is speculated that Indians may have also made plates and chokers using the hollow rib bones from some of the medium to larger sized animals.
