Native American pipe stems
The smoking
pipe was a revered instrument for sacred ceremonial purposes. Its straight
stem served to epitomize the connection with his maker, and with the proper use
gathered wisdom of the universe into the midst of those who smoked it in
preparation for discussion of important matters.
Most pipe stems were made from ash or sumac, which had a soft pith in the center
which could be easily removed. The length of an average wooden pipe
including the bowl was 30 inches, although some great ceremonial pipes were 5
feet long. Most wooden stems were broad and nearly flat in section.
The catlinite stems were either round or oblong in cross section.
